Altar to Stela D (Side 2)

The altar of Stela D features two monstrous heads facing away from one another (click here to view the other side). Both mouths exhibit the fangs which are commonly found on the representations of serpents and the bicephalic theme is also congruous with the double headed cosmic serpent monster. The mouth and nose are very different on this side, and that is because this side is the defleshed version of the being…(click here to read about the stelae of Copan).
