Quiriguá: The Maya Creation Stones

Fig AUR1: Auriga

This is the constellation of Auriga, which could be the place Five-Sky House which is detailed in the text on Stela C at Quirigua – it certainly includes five stars, is in the sky, and looks like a house. This constellation also figured at the Zapotec capital of Monte Alban, where they built an observatory that mimicked the shape of the constellation with deliberate viewing holes to track its progression. It was clearly important, and at the time the major star of the group, Capella, was the brightest star in the sky (click here to read more about the observatory at Monte Alban).
