Altar M
This is the Zoomorphic Altar of Stela M which is clearly a precursor to the works that followed at Quirigua. It was presumably dedicated by K’ak’ Yipyaj Chan K’awiil (Smoke Shell) who erected Stela M in 756AD and depicts the King being born from the mouth of a serpent with the body of a turtle mounted on the legs of a jaguar.
