Animal Glyph on the Temple of Inscriptions
This carved stone is part of the brickwork of Structure 11, the Temple of Inscriptions, at Copan. It demonstrates the depth of artistic style and breadth of the subject matter, as this animal figure is the only example at Copan. It is thought that even the Royal family learned skills such as painting and carving, and so many original and unique pieces were created for fun as much as for function.
