The Stelae of Copán – An Evolution of Art & Religion

Altar of Stela D

The altar of Stela D features two monstrous heads facing away from one another (click here to view the other side). The nose this side is distinctly feline, but mouths exhibit the fangs which are commonly found on the representations of serpents and the bicephalic theme is also congruous with the double headed cosmic serpent monster. There is also a general hawk-like appearance, especially in the way the face narrows to a point.
